BIBLE STUDY WEEK # 1 (SHARING)

 I was reading the study and I thought about John and Jesus was born the same year. Then I thought about the historical fact that King Herod was so upset when he found out that the wise men had went another way when they came to see Jesus as an infant. He was so upset when he couldn't fine Jesus that he ordered for all the babies from age 2 down to be killed, just to get Jesus, (Matthew 2:1-6; 16-17) I said to myself, how did John the Baptist escape this? I may have studied it years ago, but couldn't remember. I did research to find anything on this. I had to read closely to see it. John was born at the time of Jesus, but they were born in different district; King Herod only had the babies in Bethlehem to be killed, but John was born in the hill country of Hebron, which was another district of Judea. King Herod was told that the babe was coming from the district in Bethlehem. Can you see that?

Following Jesus means that we must LISTEN, OBEY, and do things HIS way!
Jesus came to invite lost people into God's kingdom. If we are going to follow Jesus, then we must listen, obey, and be careful to do things His way. Peter and his friends had to leave behind fishing as their career. Though they were good at fishing, Jesus had a much bigger and better plan for them. When you are a true disciple of Jesus, He may tell you to do things differently than you did before.

LISTEN to what He's saying to you!

Father God, we praise You for Your love and grace. Thank You for salvation. Thank You for Jesus dying on the cross for our sins (my sins). Your grace and mercy has called me to discipleship. I accept my calling and ask that You anoint me for Your work. Help me to continue to spread the Gospel of Jesus. Bless others to see the calling on my life, so they will answer their calling too.  Keep me close to the cross of Jesus Christ. Help me to follow You no matter where it led me. These blessings we thank You for, and ask You in Jesus' mighty name, amen.

 I shared  the last post because Galilee is a big part of Jesus' ministry.  Following Him, we must have faith in Him first!

Thank God I have had time to study right now. As I was reading through this. I saw this.......

Philippians 4:19 says, "My God will meet all your needs. He will meet them in keeping with his wonderful riches that come to you because you belong to Christ Jesus." Everyone needs his or her physical needs taken care of; Jesus proved to Peter that He provides everything we need. Everyone needs forgiveness from sin. Jesus provided that. Jesus even provided the way of ETERNAL LIFE to those who put their faith and trust in Him. When we lack faith, it is often because we don't trust that God will provide exactly what we need! Jesus PROVES to us that He is our faithful Provider. Faith is based on knowledge and experience. We know that we can trust God because of what the Bible teaches and because of how we've seen Him work in our own lives.

My faith has grown in God because He has been there for me, even though we must go through different things, God is still with us, and will never leave us as Hebrews 13:5 says.
"Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you."  Jesus' Ministry teaches us this. Its so important to know His ministry.

 A large part of Jesus' ministry was done in Galilee, because of the lack of faith in Jerusalem.  Jesus' headquarters was based in a city of Galilee, which was Capernaum.

In Roman times, the country was divided into Judea, Samaria, and Galilee, which comprised the whole northern section of the country, and was the largest of the three regions under the tetrarchy. When Iudaea became a Roman province, formed from a merger of Judea, Samaria and Idumea, Galilee was briefly a part of it, then separated from it for two to three centuries. The Galilee region was presumably the home of Jesus during at least 30 years of his life. Jesus was brought to Galilee by his parents Joseph and Mary after learning of the death of Herod while residing in Egypt (Matthew 2:19-23). The first three Gospels of the New Testament are mainly an account of Jesus' public ministry in this province, particularly in the towns of Nazareth and Capernaum. Galilee is also cited as the place where Jesus performed many public miracles including curing a blind man.

Getting Started

 

The Call:

Before we get started, let's look at the inauguration of Jesus' ministry.

Jesus Baptism: (Matthew 3:13-17; Mark 1:9-11; Luke 3:21-22, Colossians 2:13)

The Temptation: (Matthew 4:1-11)

 

One of the key themes of Jesus' early public ministry is the calling of his disciples. On one level, of course, Jesus' calling of these men was unique because they went on to become the apostles--his official and inspired spokesmen. But on another level, his calling of these men is typical because he calls all people (including you and me!) to be his disciples. And the principles that guided Jesus' calling of the twelve also apply to his calling of us.   One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God. When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles: Simon (whom he named Peter), his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called the Zealot, Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor. 

There were twelve in all.  The call of the first disciples of Jesus is a key episode in the life of Jesus in the four gospel (Matthew 4:118-22, Mark 1:16-20 and Luke 5:1-11). On the Sea of Galilee it appears in John 1:35-51. This reports the first encounter with two of the disciples a littler earlier in the presence of John the Baptist.  Particularly in the Gospel of Mark, the beginning of the ministry of Jesus and the call of the first disciples are inseparable.  In the Gospel of John the first disciples are also disciples of John the Baptist and one of them is identified as Andrew, the brother of Apostle Peter.

The next day John was there again with two of his disciples. When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, "Look, the Lamb of God!"  When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus.... Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and told him, "We have found the Messiah".

Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist; Matthew 3:13-17……..

¹³ Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. ¹⁴ And John tried to prevent Him, saying, "I need to be baptized by You, and are You coming to me?" ¹⁵ But Jesus answered and said to him, "Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he allowed Him.
¹⁶ When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. ¹⁷ And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."
 
The Gospel of Matthew and the Gospel of Mark report the call of the first disciples by the Sea of Galilee:
As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. "Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men." At once they left their nets and followed him.  The Gospel of Luke reports the call by the Sea of Galilee too, but along with the first miraculous draught of fishes. In all Gospel accounts, this episode takes place after the Baptism of Jesus. The gathering of the disciples in John 1:35-49 follows the many patterns of discipleship that continue in the New Testament, in that those who have received someone else's witness become witnesses to Jesus themselves. Andrew follows Jesus because of the testimony of John the Baptist, Philip brings Nathanael and the pattern continues in John 4:4-26 where the Samaritan Woman at the Well testifies to the town people about Jesus.

Jesus' Call (Luke 5:1-11)

Peter, Andrew, James, and John were all fishermen. Fishing was their job. You may enjoy an afternoon of fishing. These men were professional fishermen. Every day they let down their nets, caught the fish, cleaned the fish, and sold them. Day after day, they did these same things over and over again. Jesus walked right up to them, and offered to turn their routine into a great adventure. One day Jesus was standing by the Sea of Galilee. The people crowded around Him and listened to the word of God. Jesus saw two boats at the edge of the water. They had been left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. He got into the boat that belonged to Simon (Peter). Jesus asked him to go out a little way from shore. Then He sat down in the boat and taught the people. When He finished speaking, He turned to Simon (Peter). He said, "Go out into deep water. Let the nets down so you can catch some fish." -  Luke 5:1-4

Jesus also called Philip, and the other disciples too. 

Following Jesus means knowing that He is God!

Jesus showed Peter and the others that He was unlike anyone else - He was God. Look back to the story: Jesus had the disciples catch so many fish that TWO boats began to sink. When Peter saw this miracle, he was certain Jesus was God (Matthew 16:16).

Following Jesus means that you have FAITH - you trust Him to provide everything you need.

When you say YES to something, you are essentially saying NO to something else. When your parents said YES to marrying each other, they said NO to everyone else. If you only have one dollar at the dollar store, and you say YES to buy something, you are saying NO to buying any other item. Jesus wanted Peter, James, and John to say YES in following Him and NO to life as usual. Their boats, nets, lines, and hooks were familiar to them and made them feel successful, safe, and secure. Jesus would show them that HE alone would be their All-Sufficient One. The Bible says that they left everything (even that fortune in fish) and followed Jesus.

The Gospel is the ministry of Jesus, and the author wrote about Him, because they were with Him.  Each Gospel has its own story of the Ministry of Jesus. Let's take a look at them in each study, (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.)

NEW BIBLE STUDY INTRODUCTION: 5/4/14

The Ministry of Jesus Study:
  
This study is focus on Jesus' Life and Ministry.  We have covered some interesting topics, but this one is the most important one to me.  It will reveal the very core of the Gospel.  When I heard this in my spirit, I was so excited!  Looking into the ministry of Jesus is a blessing. We know He was born in Bethlehem, Judea, the city of David as a fulfilment from (Micah 5:2), and you can find this fulfillment in (Luke2:4-7), (but his ministry was outreach. He was known as the man from Galilee, a Nazareth, where God led his step-father Joseph for protection.  Jesus was rise up in Galilee, but he left Galilee to come to the city of Jerusalem where he would be betrayed, put to death, and resurrected. He went from Bethany to Jerusalem, from the Last Supper to the Garden of Gethsemane, from Gethsemane to the Palace of the High Priest, from the Palace of Caiaphas to Pontius Pilate's Judgment Hall, from Pilate to King Herod's Palace, from King Herod's Palace to Pilate, from Pilate's Judgment Hall to Golgotha or Calvary. But before all this, Jesus left a legacy of ministry for His followers. We will study that ministry.
 
Galilee, lying in the northern region of Israel, served as the major ministry center for Jesus.The headquarters of His ministry was Capernaum, the city mentioned in Luke 4:31, it was because of Jesus' teaching that his fame began spreading throughout the region (there are so many scriptural references of His ministry in Luke; 5:3, 17; 6:6; 11:1; 13:10, 22, 26; 19:47; 20:1, 21:37; 23:5). This is the first of several reports about the popular interest, curiosity and excitement being generated by Jesus (4:22, 28, 32, 36-37; 5:15; 7:17).  What message could possibly generate so much interest?  Good question!
 
The next passage reveals the nature of Jesus' claims and provides initial answers to this question.  Jesus Preaches in Nazareth; the time of fulfilment has come (4:16-30). This study will take us deeper into the ministry of Jesus. We will explore many things about the ministry of Jesus, in the area of healing, miracles, prayers, teaching, and the parables He used.  Have you ever waited a long time for something?  As you see it draw near, anticipation rises.  Do you remember the turning points as you moved from dating to engagement and then marriage, the anticipation of graduation, a work promotion, the purchase of a house; arrival of a child? The moment, when it comes, is full of joy and the emotion of the realization of what had been anticipated. God had promised the decisive demonstration of his salvation for His people for a long time.  Now Jesus turns to declare the day has come; opportunity is present.  After almost two thousand years of promise, stretching all the way back to Abraham, Jesus claims that the promise of a prophet, like Isaiah are now being decisively realized.
 
But as in many great moments, questions arise.  Is this really it?  Have we moved from the days of promise to the time of the beginning of realization?  Is God at work to fulfill His promise?  Jesus' synagogue declaration brings a moment of decision for those who hear His claims.  A snapshot of His entire ministry flashes in this brief exchange.  Jesus appears to speak during the reading of the Prophets.  He reads from Isaiah 61:1-2, a passage that promises the coming of God's salvation.  His commentary, unlike most sermons, is brief, declaring simply, "Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing." The claim is so great that we need to work through the elements of the Old Testament passage carefully. The introductory summary of Jesus' ministry begins here after He had spent time before God in the wilderness for forty days (Luke 4:1-13). 
 
This study will cover Jesus' ministry from beginning to end. This is the outline for the study each week.

Father God, as we start this study, we ask that You would bless us with the knowledge, wisdom, and understanding. We praise You for all that You do for us, all that You have done for us, and all that You will do for us. Thank You!  Our hearts is preparing to learn more about Your Son Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. We desire to know more about Him in His ministry while on this earth, please bless us to gain that knowledge, and the understanding to use it with wisdom.  Bless us to have spiritual ears to hear what the Holy Spirit says to us as we study this topic; thank You Lord. We ask for the Holy Spirit Who indwells in us to teach us, we ask for and receive an impartation of the wisdom that comes only from Heaven; it is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial, and sincere. We thank You always for all You do to teach us more about You and all that we need to live on this earth. Lord, Your Holy Spirit is our Counselor, Teacher, and Provider. Thank You, Father, for the performance of Your Word in our lives. This we pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
