This Week's Prayer

Praise the Lord, today is Thanksgiving! Father God, we come to praising You and honoring You and thanking You and loving You for Who You are today in our lives; it's a blessing to be able to know You, and honor You, and respect You as our Lord and Savior of the world. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in us as it is in Heaven. We love You Lord Jesus for coming to this earth and dying for our sin and making a way for us to come to the Father when we need too. Right now, Lord, we ask for a blessing on everyone we know and those we don't know, so they can live a blessed life in You. This we pray in Jesus' Mighty Name. AMEN.

Subject:       The Lord's Prayer:  (Hallowed be Thy name) Continue:

. …Hallowed Be Your Name Now let us turn to the last great statement made in the introduction: "Hallowed be Your name." More correctly translated, it should read, "Let Your name be made holy."

The name of God stands for all that God is. When the Lord was leading the children of Israel out of Egypt through the wilderness, He sent His angel and told them, "I want you to obey Moses; do what he 11 tells you because My name is in him" (see Exodus 23:21). That means all that God is—all that God stands for—is in His name. There is a very interesting verse in Leviticus: "And whoever blasphemes the name of the LORD shall surely be put to death" (Leviticus 24:16). The name of God was so reverent to the children of Israel that they did not even pronounce it. In their long history they completely lost its pronunciation. Consequently, no one knows today the pronunciation of that mystical tetra grammaton, YHWH. We have it translated "Jehovah"—some say it is "Yahweh"—who is right? No one knows! And why do we not know? Because the name of God was so holy, so sacred, and demanded such reverence that the children of Israel dared not even pronounce it. In conservative circles today there is a familiarity with the name of God that ought not to be. You and I become too familiar with things that are sacred and holy, and we need to be very careful in this. It is tragic when a man or woman out on the street takes God's name in vainbut the thing that is more tragic is the blasphemy of the sanctuary. And do you know what that is? It is the thing of which I am continually reminding myself. We who walk into the pulpit do so with such frequency that we become familiar with it. We can brush against holy and sacred things so constantly that they can become commonplace. When a guest speaker comes to our pulpit, I always observe his manner as he approaches the sacred desk. And you who come to the pew—you do well to be reverent in His presence in the house that has been dedicated to Him. God, deliver us from treating as commonplace the things that are sacred before You! But let us think upon the way in which you and I can make God's name holy. Can we add to that which is already infinitely holy? Certainly not. Then what did our Lord mean by the statement, "Hallowed be Your name"? We are sure that He meant more than that we should arise in some Sunday morning service and repeat with the others, "Hallowed by Your name." He meant that by our lives we are to make God's name holy. There are two men whose names are mentioned in Genesis: One was a disgrace to the name of God, and the other commended the name of God. These two men had one characteristic in common—they always built an altar where they chose to dwell. When Abraham went into Canaan, a Canaanite passing by observed that they had a new neighbor for he had seen his altar. Everywhere Abraham went, he built an altar to God. And Abraham began to do business with the Canaanites who found him to be honest. They found that everything Abraham said invited their confidence. Finally they reached the conclusion that the God whom Abraham worshiped was a holy God, and surely the name of God was made holy in Canaan because of the life of Abraham. But when Jacob started out, he could not be trusted. Do not attempt to explain away the first part of his life, for it held only dishonor. Two things always marked the path over which he had gone: He had built an altar and he had defrauded someone. One day God met him as he was In-route—he was alone and God led him down by the brook Jabbok. And God told Jacob that he could not continue conducting himself in that manner, for God's name must be made holy. And God caused the socket of Jacob's leg to be dislocated. I believe that God will do that today for anyone of His children who is bringing dishonor to His name. Paul said to his people in that day, "…the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you…" (Romans 2:24). My fundamental friend, my premillennial brother, let us go to the top of yonder mountain where He gave the Sermon on the Mount—we need to go there. We must have men and women who name the name of God and whose lives correspond to it! I commented to a friend of mine, "If I ever leave the ministry—and there are times when I am tempted to do it—it will not be due to a loss of faith in the Book." There was a time when I had doubts about the Bible, but today I do not have a single doubt; I am willing to stake the eternal destiny of my soul upon the accuracy of the Bible. I believe it with all my heart. If I ever leave the ministry, it will be because of leaders who profess to know the name of God but blaspheme that name in their living. Go to the top of the mountain and listen as He reveals His will. I know we are not saved by the Sermon on the Mount, but you and I can make His name holy by reading it and abiding therein. I know it is a ministry of condemnation, but it will cause us to flee to Jesus for refuge, for salvation, deliverance, and power; and we will become God's child by faith in Jesus Christ that we might be enabled to make His name holy in our living. Are you hallowing God's name in your daily life?

Scripture Reading

(Psalm 141:1-10)

Lord, I cry unto thee: make haste unto me; give ear unto my voice, when I cry unto thee.

Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense; and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.

Set a watch, O Lord, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips.

Incline not my heart to any evil thing, to practise wicked works with men that work iniquity: and let me not eat of their dainties.

Let the righteous smite me; it shall be a kindness: and let him reprove me; it shall be an excellent oil, which shall not break my head: for yet my prayer also shall be in their calamities.

When their judges are overthrown in stony places, they shall hear my words; for they are sweet.

Our bones are scattered at the grave's mouth, as when one cutteth and cleaveth wood upon the earth.

But mine eyes are unto thee, O God the Lord: in thee is my trust; leave not my soul destitute.

Keep me from the snares which they have laid for me, and the gins of the workers of iniquity.

10 Let the wicked fall into their own nets, whilst that I withal escape.

ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS

Questions:

1).     What do it means to hollow God's name?

I believe it means to honor, respect, and cherish Him and His name; also to praise Him in the highest regard. It also means not to use His Name in vain no matter what.

2).    What do hallowed means?

It means to consecrate or set apart as being holy; to venerate as being holy, and it means to give respect to.
3).    Does the Bible speak of His Name as being holy?

Yes it does! In Psalm 7:17 says, "I will praise the Lord according to his righteousness: and will sing praise to the name of the Lord most high." (Luke 11:2). There are so many other scriptures that tell us to honor God's Name and Who He is.
4).    Is holiness a prime characteristic of God?

Yes, holiness is a prime characteristic of who God really is, and why He desire us to be holy as He is.

5).    According to OT what are we asking when we say those words? "Hallowed be Thy Name,"

Jesus taught us this prayer through His disciples and we should be asking that God reveal His glory through His name in this earth. The OT patriarch honored God's name as well as who He was.  This is giving God the glory He deserve.
6).    What should we be asking for when we pray this phrase?

We should be asking for God to receive glory, honor, and praise. We should be exalting Him as this Psalm says, "I will extol the Lord at all times; his praise will always be on my lips.  My soul will boast in the Lord; let the afflicted hear and rejoice.  Glorify the Lord with me; let us exalt his name together.  (Psalm. 34:1-3). I like that word "boast!"
7).       According to the Bible does God deserve to be hallow? Explain.

Yes, and yes again!!  Personally speaking, I know He does. God has showed Himself to be the One and only true God in this universe. Since God changed my life there has been awesome things happen to help me know that God deserve the glory, honor, and all the praise. AMEN.
8).    Why does the Lord's Prayer contain this phrase?

In the Lord's Prayer, the phrase, "Hallowed be Your name" is appropriate, because not only is God holy, but His name is holy too.
9).    Is God's Name Holy as He is?

Yes, I believe it is! The Bible tell us that God's Name is holy, and should be honored just as Himself. That is powerful, amen!!
10).  What do the word consecrated means?

It means to make or declare (something, typically a church) sacred; dedicate formally to a religious or divine purpose. "the present Holy Trinity church was consecrated in 1845" (in Christian belief) make (bread or wine) into the body or blood of Christ. "they received the host but not the consecrated wine" ordain (someone) to a sacred office, typically that of bishop.

11).   What do the word sacred means?

1.devoted or dedicated to a deity or to some religious purpose;consecrated2.entitled to veneration or religious respect by association with divinityor divine things; holy.3.pertaining to or connected with religion (opposed to secular orprofane ):sacred music; sacred books.4.reverently dedicated to some person, purpose, or object: a morning hour sacred to study. 5. regarded with reverence:the sacred memory of a dead hero.6.secured against violation, infringement, etc., as by reverence orsense of right: sacred oaths; sacred rights.7.properly immune from violence, interference, etc., as a person oroffice.

12).  Name other scriptures which speak of God Holy Name.

(Leviticus 22:2; Deuteronomy 28:58; Isaiah 29:23, 57:15; Ezekiel 36:23; Daniel 2:20; Matthew 6:9).
13).  How do we become holy as God is Holy?

The Lord took the initiative to pull us out of our former lifestyles. He saved us, cleansed us, and set us apart for righteousness. If we have believed in Christ for salvation, we have been washed by the regeneration of the Holy Spirit and set apart from the world for godliness (see Romans 12:2). We are holy because of Jesus Christ. We must live a holy life as well.

Prayer From The Bible:

The Prayer of Abraham

Genesis 18:16-33

16When the men got up to leave, they looked down toward Sodom, and Abraham walked along with them to see them on their way. 17Then the LORDsaid, "Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do? 18Abraham will surely become a great and powerful nation, and all nations on earth will be blessed through him. 19For I have chosen him, so that he will direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the LORD by doing what is right and just, so that the LORD will bring about for Abraham what he has promised him."

20Then the LORD said, "The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great and their sin so grievous 21that I will go down and see if what they have done is as bad as the outcry that has reached me. If not, I will know."

22The men turned away and went toward Sodom, but Abraham remained standing before the LORD. 23Then Abraham approached him and said: "Will you sweep away the righteous with the wicked? 24What if there are fifty righteous people in the city? Will you really sweep it away and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous people in it? 25Far be it from you to do such a thing -- to kill the righteous with the wicked, treating the righteous and the wicked alike. Far be it from you! Will not the Judge of all the earth do right?"

26The LORD said, "If I find fifty righteous people in the city of Sodom, I will spare the whole place for their sake."

27Then Abraham spoke up again: "Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the LORD, though I am nothing but dust and ashes, 28what if the number of the righteous is five less than fifty? Will you destroy the whole city because of five people?"

"If I find forty-five there," he said, "I will not destroy it."

29Once again he spoke to him, "What if only forty are found there?"

He said, "For the sake of forty, I will not do it."

30Then he said, "May the LORD not be angry, but let me speak. What if only thirty can be found there?"

He answered, "I will not do it if I find thirty there."

31Abraham said, "Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the LORD, what if only twenty can be found there?"

He said, "For the sake of twenty, I will not destroy it."

32Then he said, "May the LORD not be angry, but let me speak just once more. What if only ten can be found there?"

He answered, "For the sake of ten, I will not destroy it."

33When the LORD had finished speaking with Abraham, he left, and Abraham returned home.

Weekly Pattern: Praise

Praise is not the inevitable byproduct that comes when everything is going right in our lives; it is the driving force. Praise will get our focus where it needs to be—on God. If we start praising God in the middle of our problems, our problems will shrink so much that we'll hardly remember to bring them to God! We'll be so busy praising Him and thanking Him for His blessings that our problems will be an afterthought. In our prayer we must remember to praise Him more than asking Him for something.

This Week's Prayer:

Lord, what an awesome thing to be reminded of Your holy name and the power that comes with it. It is a pleasure to be a child of Yours. We honor Your name, Lord. We praise Your name, Lord. There is no other name in heaven and earth like Your name. Your name is precious to us. Your name is almighty. Your name is great. There have been so many powerful names passed through this earth, but none can be compared to Your Holy name.  Thank You for the opportunity to be able to honor Your great Name. Hallelujah to Your Name; Glory be to Your Great Name; Thank You for allowing us to use your Name Jesus. Jehovah is a Your Father's Name and we honor it so much. Hallowed be Thy Name.  AMEN.

Subject:   "The Lord's Prayer"   (Hallowed be Thy name)

Talking to the Father about the Father:

TEXT: "In this manner, therefore, pray: 'Our Father in heaven, hallowed by your name'" (Matthew 6:9).

IDEA: "Hallowed be your name" is not a request that God be made holy, but that we will be able to reflect His holiness in the way we pray and the way we live.

PURPOSE: To help listeners pray this petition with meaning.

When a police officer knocks on the door and shouts, "Open in the name of the law!" what's going on? What is the "name of the law"?

When in the Lord's Prayer we ask, "Hallowed by your name," what are we praying for?

I. Is this a request that somehow God's name will be made holy?

In the Old Testament God's "name" stands for His person and is honored by His people. His name is often described as holy:

Psalm 30:4 – "Sing praise to the Lord, you saints of his, and give thanks at the remembrance of his holy name."

Psalm 97:12 – "Rejoice in the Lord, you righteous, and give thanks at the remembrance of his holy name."

Psalm 111:9 – "He has sent redemption to his people; he has commanded his covenant forever; holy and awesome is his name." Holiness is a prime characteristic of God.

II. Looking at the Old Testament, what do you think we're asking for when we say "Hallowed by your name"?

Look at two passages that refer to God's name.

Isaiah 29:23 – "When he sees his children, the work of My hands, in his midst, they will hallow My name, and hallow the Holy One of Jacob, and fear the God of Israel."

"What do you think "keep my name holy" means?

What is the concern of the prophets like Ezekiel in 20:8-9 and 36:20:23?

Ezekiel 20:8-9—"But they rebelled against me and would not obey me; they did not all cast away the abominations which were before their eyes, nor did they forsake the idols of Egypt. Then I said, 'I will pour out my fury on them and fulfill my anger against them in the midst of the land of Egypt.' But I acted for my name's sake, that it should not be profaned before the Gentiles among whom they were, in whose sight I had made myself known to them, to bring them out of the land of Egypt."

Ezekiel 36:20-23– "When they came to the nations, wherever they went, they profaned my holy name—when they said to them, 'These are the people of the Lord, and yet they have gone out of his land." But I had concern for my holy name, which the house of Israel had profaned among the nations wherever they went. Therefore say to the house of Israel, 'Thus says the Lord God: I do not do this for your sake, O house of Israel, but for my holy name's sake, which you have profaned among the nations wherever you went. And I will sanctify my great name, which has been profaned among the nations, which you have profaned in their midst; and the nations shall know that I am the Lord,' says the Lord God, 'when I am hallowed in you before their eyes.' "What should we be asking for when we pray, "hallowed be Your name"?

This prayer commonly known as the Lord's prayer contains the phrase, "Hallowed be Your name," but what does hallowed mean? The American Heritage Dictionary defines hallowed as, "sanctified; consecrated; highly venerated; sacrosanct," like the hallowed halls of a great university. To hallow is "to make or set apart as holy. To respect or honor greatly; revere." In simpler terms, we often use hallowed to refer to someone whom we should treat with awe and respect because they deserve it.

Why does the Lord's prayer contain the phrase, "Hallowed be Your name"? The phrase follows the opening of the prayer, which directly addresses God, so we know that the phrase means that God's name should be hallowed. When we review the dictionary definition of hallowed, we can understand why God should be hallowed, but why should His name be hallowed?

To understand why God's name should be hallowed, we first need to understand that the Jews (God's chosen people) had different naming customs than we do today. To a Jew, a person's name was more than just a way to identify them physically; their name also reflected their nature. Jews named their children in a way that expressed the child's mission in life. Because of this custom, the Jewish people had about 16 different names for God in the Hebrew Old Testament. Each name reflected a different aspect of God's character, so God's names were considered by the Jews to be just as holy as God Himself. In fact, God's names were and are so holy to the Jews, that they never write His full name for fear of bringing disrespect to it and to God.

In the Lord's Prayer, the phrase, "Hallowed be Your name" is appropriate, because not only is God holy, but His name is holy too. We should never treat God's name with disrespect as some do when they curse and use God's name in vain. We should give the same respect and honor to God's name that we give to God because He and His name are one in the same.

Week # 3 ANSWERS

Questions:

1).       What standards in our Christian life should we get back to?

We need to get back to some good old-fashion virtues of God's honesty and integrity. We need to pray more and reverent God's plan more in our life.

2).       What was the Sermon on the Mount?

The Sermon on the Mount was a sermon Jesus preached on the mount for people to live by God's grace and mercy. We are no longer under the Law, but grace.

3).       What is the Lord's Prayer to us?

It is a guide to prayer, not just to repeat carelessly, but to reverent it in our hearts with a cry.

4).       Is the Lord's Prayer for today?

Yes, the Lord's Prayer is a model for us to pray today, it teaches us what our focus should be when praying.

5).       Do we have to bang on the door to get God to hear us?

No, that is not what the Word of God teaches us; ask and you will receive according to God's will and plan for your life. We must believe when we ask as Mark 11:24 says.

6).       How is asking, seeking, knocking a part of worship?

In the Bible we are encouraged to pray the three-fold promise of God, because this is a promise from God to His children, which is a part of worshipping Him through our prayers daily, so He can provide for us.

7).       The Lord's Prayer was given to avoid what?

The Lord's prayer was given to avoid vain repetition words; God want us to know He heard us the first time, when we do this it's not about God hearing us, but men who are around us at that time.

8).      Have you prayed with persistency lately?

Yes, I just did over the weekend with my sisters and a niece who were about to get on a plan according to God's leading.

9).       Since you started this study have anything in your prayer changed?

Yes! Yes! Yes!  I am praying more, and straight to the point, not over and over again as though God can't hear or understand our heart's thoughts; He knows! Amen. I am coming into God's presence now with more worship and praise because He knows.

WEEKLY PATTERN: PRAISE

The book of Psalms is a collection of songs filled with praises to God. Among them is Psalm 9, which says, "I will be glad and rejoice in you; I will sing the praises of your name, O Most High" (verse 2). Psalm 18:3 says God is "worthy of praise." Psalm 21:13 praises God both for who He is and for His great power: "Be exalted in your strength, LORD; we will sing and praise your might."

Psalm 150 uses the term praise thirteen times in six verses. The first verse provides the "where" of praise—everywhere! "Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens.
- The next verse teaches "why" to praise the Lord: "Praise him for his acts of power; praise him for his surpassing greatness."
